Peter has it all wrong - that Japan is a 'trusted' power for many Asian nations? His misreading of the deep and complicated historical relationship between China, Japan and the East- and South-east Asian countries makes me question his confident assertions about everything else.

Japan did atrocious things in WW2. Unlike Germany Japan hasn't yet acknowledged nor apologised for kidnapping tens of thousands of women (korean, Filipino etc) to "service their troops"....for pillaging and raping women as they colonised SE Asia. My own grandpa was taken away (and executed) as were many young men - mom was only 6. Japanese still have a superior attitude to non -Japanese. My family has roots in South China. We've been in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore for 250 years.
